A lot of the newcomers on GNU/Linux and other free Operational Systems ask about games. Some of them don't use GNU/Linux (or use it in dual boot) just because of the mainstream games. The objective of this page is to make a review of some free games and help newcomers change to entirely free operating systems.
Note that all these games are free software, and most of them are very portable so you can probably run them in various platforms.
Nethack
I do consider Nethack one of the greatest games ever. This is the description in Nethack's website:
" NetHack is a single player dungeon exploration game that runs on a wide variety of computer systems, with a variety of graphical and text interfaces all using the same game engine. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games, the emphasis in NetHack is on discovering the detail of the dungeon and not simply killing everything in sight - in fact, killing everything in sight is a good way to die quickly. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender. "
I strongly recommend Nethack. You will love it.
Urban Terror
Urban Terror is a Quake III Arena mod. It feels like Counter Strike, but is much better in my opinion, you can throw knifes and do Parkour stuff! :)
It is my favorite FPS.
Wormux
Wormux is a Worms-like game. It's very nice to play with your friends at a saturday night. It have a online mode, and people from the entire world play it. However, the AI mode is not very good yet.
Lincity
There are two versions: Lincity and Lincity-ng. The first is a game that resembles the first Sim City for SNES. The second is a polished and improved version of Lincity, with nice graphics. Both are very good indeed, I do recommend Lincity-ng, it's very impressive.
Supertux
Once more, I will borrow the description from the site:
" SuperTux is a classic 2D jump'n run sidescroller game in a style similar to the original Super Mario games covered under the GPL. "
It's a very challenger game, try it!
Some mainstream games are free software too!
id Software games
id Software is the company responsible for games such as Doom, Quake and Wolfstein 3D. Thanks to John Carmack, these games are all free software, and run natively on GNU/Linux. I played Doom II. It's nice.
Made by Raven Software, Hexen and Heretic are free software. I never played them, however.
